Ringness House Museum

Details

As one of the eight original Norwegian families who settled in Bosque County, Jens and Kari Ringness welcomed visitors, friends, and family to their large dobblehus. This 1859 house near Neils Creek was the site of the first Lutheran church service in Bosque County. In January, 1867, visiting pastor S.S. Reque arrived to baptise babies, officiate weddings, and hold church. After the service, Pastor Reque suggested that a church be built in the Norse community and that a pastor be called. His suggestion was approved by vote, and thus began the thriving church which anchors this area, Our Saviors Lutheran Church.

The Ringness family and home is also known for the invention of the disk plow. Jens and Kari’s son, Ole, built the prototype in the blacksmith shop which still stands on the property, some distance from the Ringness house.

With donations from The Norwegian Society of Texas, and from benefactors far and wide, the house has been restored from ruin. It is now open as a house museum, and visitors are happily welcome with some advance notice. Please be sure to take advantage of the Tour of Homes during the Norwegian Country Christmas which takes place the first Saturday in December. Tickets may be purchased through the Clifton Chamber of Commerce.

Bosque Animal Rescue Kennels (BARK)

BARK is a non-profit 501(c) (3) animal rescue shelter that provides a temporary haven for lost, abandoned and mistreated dogs in Bosque County. In 2019 BARK took in over 130 animals, adopted 92, and assisted with spay/neuters for low income pet owners, as well as medical care and food for many others. BARK is grateful for the generosity of so many caring individuals who have donated money, dog food, blankets and most recently a washer and dryer. We do not receive public funding and solely rely on private donations and fundraising efforts. We also appreciate the many volunteers who often give up a part of their life to attend adoption events and help with fundraisers. BARK could not do its work without the community support it receives!

Located in Clifton, Texas, the Bosque Arts Center is a non-profit cultural art center. Included under its umbrella are the Art Council, Art Club, Photography Guild, Pottery Guild, Culinary Club, Civic Music Association, and the Tin Building Theatre.

Classes are held regularly in the classrooms of the old college building. Some of our classes include: Karate, Weaving, Crochet, Yoga, Jewelry Making, Watercolor, and Pottery.

Housed on the second floor is our main gallery including the permanent collection acquired from our Annual Bosque Art Classic: A National Judged & Juried Art Show & Sale (held every September) and Photography Room for special exhibits.

Founded 1861 in “old Clifton,” First Presbyterian Church is the oldest continuous congregation in Bosque County. The church celebrated its 150th Anniversary on January 20, 2011.

First Presbyterian has been at its location on S. Avenue G since 1911. The current building, constructed in 1961, underwent an expansion that was completed in 2010.

The church has been served by Pastor Clint Schofield since 2004. Regular worship services are held Sunday mornings at 11, with Sunday School at 9:30 a.m. Special evening services are held Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, and Christmas Eve.

Located in Clifton, Texas, the Bosque Arts Center is a non-profit cultural art center. Included under its umbrella are the Art Council, Art Club, Photography Guild, Pottery Guild, Culinary Club, Civic Music Association, and the Tin Building Theatre.
